Haiti: "For you gave me the grandfather of three eggs"

The nurse and midwife Marlies Vincent came recently from a SRK-use in the cholera hospital back in Haiti. She tells of her most memorable experience.

It was my third Haiti deployment. When I was doing in 2008 after the floods and a year ago, shortly after the earthquake, a relief mission, this time I was in the cholera hospital in Grand-Goâve, which operates the SRK together with other relief organizations.

Here I am responsible for a cholera patient

As a nurse and midwife I used quite differently. This time I went as a nurse, because in the cholera treatment center, there is no maternity ward.
Nevertheless, my impressive experience a birth.

Janet, a very pregnant young woman was taken to the hospital because she was suffering from cholera. Even her three-year-old daughter Madeline was sick, it was the children's tent, to adults. Both were completely exhausted and were immediately supplied with fluid and drugs.

prompt translated soon into labor. As the only midwife I took my wife. I was worried because the woman was so weak and we were not in a hospital equipped for births. Together with one of the doctors, I drove to the essentials: clamps, scissors and peel. Gloves, plastic basin and chlorine solution for disinfection was plentiful. Even three new towels.

But which should I tie off the umbilical cord? The normal line, we have had in the clinic was too thick, the thread of my little sewing too thin. Still, I wanted to try it.

same time, I was looking for alternatives - because of complications, it would become difficult. By telephone, we contacted several hospitals, led by the births. As night came on we had found a solution. Janet was just in time moved to Léogane, in a hospital of Médecins sans Frontières.

has Shortly thereafter they were born healthy, very little girl. A week later I picked her up and escorted them home. She lived in a remote small two-room house in the mountains, together with a large family.

The reception was very cordial. The whole family was waiting for us. The three-year Meslin was well again and at home. There had been very worried about the ill mother and her baby and the little girl. All kissed me, it was very moving. Thanks to the grandfather gave me three eggs. Later, back in Grand Goâve, I've cooked it an omelette.
